Go Green: Living to Help the Environment

Green living is at the top of most consumers priority lists these days. With natural resources deteriorating and the cost of energy sources on the rise, many consumers are looking to curb their living habits to help save money while turning their home into a green home. Small changes in the way we do things can result in big changes for the world around us.

The most efficient way to cut energy costs and lower electricity usage is by upgrading the appliances in your home. Older refrigerators, furnaces and air conditioners use twice the electricity of newer models.  By applying weather stripping to windows and doors where air leaks can occur you can save additional energy. By making sure your home is sealed appropriately for energy efficiency your air conditioner and furnace will work less to keep your home at the desired temperature. Another energy saving tip is to set heating thermostats below 68 degrees and cooling thermostats above 78 degrees. Each degree you lower or increase your thermostat results in a saving of 3% to 5% of energy.

If you want to save energy and make your home a green home, then upgrade and unplug. First, upgrade the light bulbs in your home to energy efficient LED or fluorescent light bulbs. Consumers who switched to these types of energy efficient bulbs lowered their electricity bills by an average of 30%. Many household items such as laptop computers use an excessive amount of energy while plugged in, even when they are turned off. By unplugging products such as these that absorb high amounts of energy while not in use, you can cut your electricity bill by 5%-10%. Consumers can use an electricity usage monitor to discover what other items in their home are using an excess of electricity.

One more thing you can do to help enforce green living in your home it by conserving water. This is one of the easiest things you can do to be environmentally friendly. The best way to conserve water is simply by shutting it off. Many consumers leave the water running while washing dishes, brushing their teeth, and lathering soap and shampoo in the shower. During all of these instances, water is wasted. Following these green living at home tips to help us generate less pollution for our environment and conserve our limited natural resources. If we all make some small changes, we can make our world a better place for everyone and everything to live.
